ROTATION - How does it work?

Have you ever wondered how KJ's keep the rotation in a fair order? Have you ever wondered how it exactly works? Every KJ or karaoke company has some kind of a system or routine that they follow to keep them organized. This may very with different individuals. I use a great system for keeping a fair rotation, and this is how it works...

You are the KJ. It is the beginning of the night, and people are just starting to turn in his or her song slips. As they turn in slips, you write the names down on a separate sheet of paper leaving space between the names to slip in new singers as needed. The 1st 8 singers is your 1st rotation. When you get a ninth singer... you put them in rotation after #1. #10 goes after #2, and so on. You weave them in as you get them. Singer #17 would weave in after #9. Get it??? It keeps things fair. Everyone sings the same # of songs in a fair order. Do this on a piece of paper once and you'll see what I mean. It works. Some people don't want to understand this. Some people just like to "bitch" about it.

If you sing in a duet... that counts as your turn in rotation. It has to be fair for everyone!

HOW TO SING MORE SONGS IN LESS TIME!

Early in the show is when you have the shortest rotation. This is the best opportunity you will generally have to sing more than 1 song in a short period of time. Not everyone is there yet. If you spend 20 minutes looking through the book looking for a song, you have to realize that everyone else has just turned in songs ahead of you. By the time you turn in your 1st slip, the KJ might be at the begining of a rotation again and now you're going to have to wait until the rotation is finished to finally get up there. Find a song and get it turned in. Then go back to the book and look for others. This way you get into rotation early.

DO's & DON'Ts

If you need to speak to the KJ, please do it while someone is singing. When someone is singing, the KJ doesn't have anything to do at that time. Please note; At the very beginning of a song, the KJ does have to set the volume, and different control levels for that particular singer. After that... the KJ is all yours. When a song is nearing it's end, the KJ has to get on the microphone and call up the next singer. he or she also has to get the next disc ready for the new singer. The best time to speak to the KJ is shortly after a new song has just started.

When someone is singing a song, it is disrespectful to join in on that singers song unless they previously invited you, or turned in the song slip with both of your names on it.

It is unfair to everyone else in rotation for you to ask the KJ to move you ahead of others. Everyone in rotation is spending money on food or drinks waiting for his or her turn in rotation. It's hard enough sometimes for the KJ to keep everything straight, with people dropping in & out of rotation and slipping those people back in. There are allot of people at the shows that take karaoke very seriously. Some of them watch the rotation like a hawk. If the KJ moves you up, he or she may catch hell from someone else. Let the KJ do his or her job... most of them know what they're doing.

NOTE: Honest mistakes are sometimes made by a KJ and people get skipped. If this happens to you, please let the KJ know right away. It is easier to correct the mistake and keep you in proper rotation if you tell the KJ ASAP If I skip someone and I catch my own mistake, I feel terrible and apologize to that person and get them on the mic next. None of us are perfect.

If you are sick or have a cold, please do not participate in karaoke until you're feeling better. The next person who holds that microphone does not want your germs to make them sick too.

Please be respectful in the handling of the microphone. Don't swing it around by the wire, it wears them out more quickly. Please don't throw them on the floor either. If the cost of doing business goes up on the karaoke company, he passes that cost on to his customer. His customer passes the cost onto you in some way. Usually higher drink prices.

Please keep in mind, that karaoke is for everyone. It is just for fun. Please be respectful to other singers. Always remember... HAVE FUN!!!
